The 10 IR KPIs a Sub-$2B Company Should Care About

August 24, 2026

4 minutes reading time

You don’t need more dashboards; you need fewer, harder KPIs.

If your IR scorecard disappeared tomorrow, which 10 numbers would your CFO actually miss—and which would they never notice were gone?

The problem with “more data” in IR

Most small and mid-cap IR teams collect far more metrics than they can use. Web traffic, email opens, event registrations, page views, and campaign clicks all look useful because they are easy to count. But easy-to-count is not the same as decision-grade.

The real test is blunt: would this metric change what your CFO funds, what your CEO says, or how you prioritize the next quarter of outreach? If the answer is no, it belongs lower on the stack.

The 10 KPIs that deserve a seat

For a sub-$2B issuer, the useful IR scorecard should sit at the intersection of liquidity, ownership, and investor behavior. That usually means a tight set of metrics like these:

  • Trading liquidity — average daily volume, but also whether volume is deep enough to support orderly trading.

  • Bid-ask spread — a simple read on friction in the market for your stock.

  • Shareholder concentration — how much of the register sits with a small number of holders.

  • Holder mix — long-only, retail, passive, hedge fund, and insider balance.

  • New institutional interest — not total meetings, but qualified meetings that lead to real follow-up.

  • Investor retention — who stays engaged across multiple quarters.

  • Coverage depth — not just whether you have coverage, but whether it is producing credible, current analysis.

  • Event participation quality — who attended, who asked substantive questions, and who came back.

  • Disclosure engagement — which releases, filings, or presentations actually draw repeat attention from the right audiences.

  • Ownership change velocity — how quickly the holder base is shifting, especially around key catalysts.

That is enough for most teams. The rest is often noise with a nicer chart.

What to stop treating as a KPI

There is a difference between a signal and a vanity metric. A strong open rate on an email blast may mean the subject line worked. It does not mean the right investors understood the message, acted on it, or were even in your target set.

Likewise, page views without identity, one-off webinar registrations, and raw social impressions rarely help an IR team decide anything. They may be useful context. They are not a scoreboard.

The uncomfortable tradeoff is that a smaller KPI set can feel less impressive internally. It is also more honest. A CFO does not need a wall of charts; they need a short list that points to cost of capital, liquidity, and ownership quality.

How to use the scorecard

The best IR KPI board does not try to explain everything. It answers a few repeated questions:

  • Is the market for our shares getting easier or harder to trade?

  • Is our holder base becoming more concentrated or more diverse?

  • Are our messages reaching investors who can actually matter?

  • Are we spending time on activity that produces follow-through?

If a metric cannot help answer one of those questions, it is probably dashboard decoration.

Where FiskLabs fits

This is where FiskLabs Analytics becomes useful: not as a bigger dashboard, but as a way to connect ownership, trading microstructure, and engagement data into one decision layer. The point is not to count more events. The point is to see which events matter.

That matters most for lean teams. A solo IR officer does not have time to defend twenty charts in a board meeting. A CFO does not want a report that measures motion instead of progress. A disciplined KPI board keeps the conversation on market structure, investor quality, and what should happen next.

Build for decisions, not display. In IR, the best metric is the one that makes the next action obvious.
